Twitter is fighting an attempt by the District Attorney’s office in New York to access the message feed of an Occupy Wall Street activist who was arrested on the Brooklyn Bridge last fall.

Malcolm Harris was one of 700 people arrested during an October 1 rally after the group walked onto the roadway of the bridge.

Prosecutors ordered a subpoena for Twitter to hand over months of tweets from Harris, which they feel might show that he was aware that police had ordered protesters not to go onto the Bridge’s roadway.

Harris had filed a motion to quash the subpoena but was denied by a judge, who ruled that he did not own his tweets. His words were the property of Twitter, the judge said.

Twitter then filed its own motion to quash as a direct response to the judge’s ruling.

“I certainly appreciate their intervention to protect my rights as a user,” Harris, who works as the managing editor for online magazine the New Inquiry, told FoxNews.com. “It shows that the DA’s office fundamentally misunderstands the technology.”

The tweets in question from the October 1 protest have long since been deleted from Harris’ page.

“The Order proceeds to assert that Mr. Harris has no proprietary interest in his Twitter account’s user information and Tweets merely because he has granted Twitter a license to the content as a part of the Terms of Service with Twitter,” reads the motion filed in New York. “Twitter respectfully submits that this analysis contradicts the express language of Twitter’s Terms of Service.”

Terms for the site state that the user owns the content they post to their Twitter feed.

“Twitter’s Terms of Service make absolutely clear that its users *own* their content. Our filing with the court reaffirms our steadfast commitment to defending those rights for our users,” Ben Lee, General Counsel for Twitter, told FoxNews.com.

Chemotherapy can be very effective as a cancer treatment, but the side effects – which include pain, fatigue, loss of appetite and memory changes – can be difficult for patients to deal with.

Noreen Fraser, cancer patient and founder of the Noreen Fraser Foundation, shared with us how she deals with chemo side effects.

Fraser was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. At the time it was stage 1, but over time it moved into her bones, then her liver.

As a consequence, Fraser’s chemo treatments became more varied and aggressive. Fraser experienced mouth sores, hair loss, fatigue and a condition called ‘chemo brain,’ which involves memory loss and inability to concentrate.

Fraser admitted for some side effects, there was nothing that could be done. However, she has found some relief in natural remedies.

Among others, Fraser credited acupuncture twice a week for helping with the pain in her legs and homemade green smoothies three times a day to boost her strength.

“I did try a lot of different things, but I think acupuncture really helped me,” Fraser said. “…That really worked for me.”

Fraser’s green smoothies involve processing greens, fruits and vegetables in a juicer (or a blender) and thereby retaining all of the fiber when consumed. This can be done with any combination of fresh, organic produce desired. One of Fraser’s typical smoothies include spinach, parsley, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, garlic, ginger, lemon and blueberries to one cup of water, as well as whey protein powder.

To absorb more vitamin D, Fraser aims to sit in the sun 15 minutes every day without sunscreen and for deficiencies in magnesium and other trace minerals, she takes supplements and soaks twice a day in Epsom salts (magnesium). She added she eats no meat or dairy.

Whenever symptoms became really bad, Fraser said it was OK to let go and not force yourself to be “up.”

“Go ahead and feel bad…give yourself a break, don’t feel like you have to go to work,” Fraser said. ”You can get back on the horse when it’s over.”

WASHINGTON – Russian President Vladimir Putin is skipping a planned visit to the United States this month for an economic summit and a much-anticipated meeting with President Barack Obama, the White House announced Wednesday.

The Russian leader told Obama by phone that he is unable to join the other leaders of the Group of Eight industrial nations meeting outside Washington on May 18-19 because he needs to finish work setting up his new Cabinet, the White House said. The Obama administration had moved the gathering to the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland from the planned venue in Chicago partly to accommodate Putin.

Neither the White House nor the Kremlin had discussed the change in plans until Wednesday, but a White House official said National Security Adviser Tom Donilon was informed of it when he visited Putin and other Russian officials in Moscow last week.

There was no immediate confirmation of the change in plans from the Kremlin.

Putin took power this week, returning after six years to a post he had previously held for two terms. He made sharp criticism of the United States a central theme in his election, but it is not clear whether he will pull back from cooperation with the United States in several areas begun by former President Dmitry Medvedev.

“The two presidents reiterated their interest in the sustained high-level dialogue that has characterized the reset of relations and the substantial progress of the last three years,” since Obama took office, the White House said in a statement outlining the phone call Wednesday.

The statement listed several areas of cooperation such as nuclear security and nonproliferation, the war in Afghanistan and Russian membership in the World Trade Organization. It did not mention whether the leaders discussed areas of disagreement, such as the international response to violence in Syria.

Medvedev, who changed places with his mentor Putin as Russia’s prime minister, will fill in for Putin at the G-8 meeting, the White House said. Obama made headlines at his last meeting with Medvedev at a nuclear security summit in South Korea in March, when Obama was overheard saying he would have more flexibility to work with Russia on missile defense after the U.S. presidential election.

Republicans pounced on the remark, saying the president has a hidden agenda that could include concessions to the Russians if he wins re-election.

Russian opposition to U.S. and NATO plans for a missile defense shield in Europe was the subtext of a surprise announcement earlier this spring of a change in venue for the G-8 meeting. The summit was long planned to take place adjacent to a larger summit of NATO leaders in Chicago.

Putin let it be known that he did not want to attend the NATO summit, as Russian leaders sometimes do by invitation, or engage NATO leaders on the missile issue, U.S. and other diplomats said. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomacy. The missile defense plan is on the NATO agenda for Chicago, although most of the summit discussions are likely to center on Afghanistan.

The switch to Camp David was partly an attempt by the U.S. to appear welcoming to Putin, so that he could meet quietly with European and other large powers at the dawn of his presidency without the awkward juxtaposition with NATO and the missile shield issue, the diplomats said.

Earlier Wednesday, speaking to thousands of soldiers at the annual Red Square military parade, Putin declared that the country is a force for world security and that Russia will stand up for its positions.

Putin’s speech, two days after his inauguration for a third term in the Kremlin, came less than a week after the nation’s military chief of staff warned that Russia would consider pre-emptive strikes, if a dispute with the United States over a Europe-based missile defense system worsens.

Russia vehemently opposes the planned placement of radars and missile interceptors in Romania and Poland, saying they would undermine Russia’s nuclear deterrent. The United States says the system is needed to protect against potential missile attacks by Iran and that the installations could not act against Russian missiles.

The annual parade marks Victory Day, which commemorates the defeat of Nazi Germany and is Russia’s most important secular holiday. The Soviet Union lost an estimated 26 million people in the war, including 8.5 million soldiers.

The White House said Obama and Putin agreed to meet next month on the sidelines of another economic gathering, the larger G-20 summit in Mexico.

DALLAS – An Army nurse showed no alarm or discomfort before suddenly collapsing during a Skype video chat with his wife, who saw a bullet hole in a closet behind him, his family said Sunday.

Capt. Bruce Kevin Clark’s family released a statement describing what his wife saw in the video feed recording her husband’s death in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan.

“Clark was suddenly knocked forward,” the statement said. “The closet behind him had a bullet hole in it. The other individuals, including a member of the military, who rushed to the home of CPT Clark’s wife also saw the hole and agreed it was a bullet hole.”

The statement says the Skype link remained open for two hours on April 30 as family and friends in the U.S. and Afghanistan tried to get Clark help.

“After two hours and many frantic phone calls by Mrs. Clark, two military personnel arrived in the room and appeared to check his pulse, but provided no details about his condition to his wife,” the statement said.

In the statement, Susan Orellana-Clark said she was providing details of what she saw “to honor my husband and dispel the inaccurate information and supposition promulgated by other parties.”

U.S. officials in Afghanistan referred questions to the Pentagon, which previously referred questions to the William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, where Clark was assigned.

The Pentagon said previously that Clark’s death remains under investigation.

Clarence Davis, spokesman for William Beaumont Army Medical Center, declined to comment on Clark’s family’s statement.

Clark, 43, grew up in Michigan and previously lived in Spencerport, N.Y., a suburb of Rochester, his wife’s hometown. He joined the Army in 2006 and was stationed in Hawaii before he was assigned to the medical center in El Paso. He deployed to Afghanistan in March.

A fever is typically a sign that something out of the ordinary is happening in your body. But a temperature reading isn’t the only sign that a fever is serious.

Leisa Priddy, a Fox News Health viewer, asked this question about her grandson:

“My grandson had a fever of 105.1. What temperature is too high in a toddler, and at what point should you take them to the doctor?”

When it comes to fevers in small children, it’s important to be cautious, because a fast-rising fever could put a child at risk for a febrile seizure.

Parents should call a doctor if a child’s temperature is more than 103 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The Academy also recommends seeing a doctor if your child experiences symptoms like:

-Loss of appetite

-Cough

-An ear ache

-Irritability or fatigue

-Vomiting

-Diarrhea

According to Dr. Stephen Turner, chief of pediatrics at SUNY Downstate at Long Island College Hospital, there are two over-the-counter medicines that can be used to reduce fever in children – acetaminophen, or Tylenol, which can be used every four hours, and Ibuprofen, which can be used ever six hours.

Vice President Biden said Sunday he is “absolutely comfortable” with same-sex couples having the same rights as others, in a statement that appeared to go beyond what President Obama has said publicly on the issue.

While stressing that “the president sets the policy,” Biden described his personal view during a Sunday show interview. The Obama campaign quickly claimed Biden was merely echoing the president’s position, but the language the vice president used was certainly stronger than Obama’s past statements.

“I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women and heterosexual men and women marrying are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties,” he said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “And quite frankly, I don’t see much of a distinction beyond that.”

Biden went on to say the situation is “evolving” and that the “social culture” is changing. In doing so, he cited the hit sitcom “Will & Grace,” which was about a woman living with a gay man. “I think ‘Will & Grace’ probably did more to educate the American public than almost anything anybody’s ever done so far,” he said.

Asked whether the Obama administration would openly endorse same-sex marriage in a second term if Obama’s re-elected, Biden said he “can’t speak” to that.

Obama has signaled support for the gay-rights community, in both his push to overturn the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy banning gays from serving openly in the military and his administration’s decision to stop defending the Defense of Marriage Act — which defines marriage as between a man and woman.

Still, the president has frustrated some gay-rights groups by not explicitly backing gay marriage. On the issue, he has said his views are “evolving.”

Faced with a flurry of questions about Biden’s Sunday show comments, Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod tweeted: “What VP said-that all married couples should have exactly the same legal rights-is precisely POTUS’s position.”

A Biden spokesperson also said in an email that Biden “was saying what the president has said previously — that committed and loving same-sex couples deserve the same rights and protections enjoyed by all Americans, and that we oppose any effort to roll back those rights.

“That’s why we stopped defending the constitutionality of section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act in legal challenges and support legislation to repeal it. Beyond that, the vice president was expressing that he, too, is evolving on the issue, after meeting so many committed couples and families in this country,” the spokesperson said.

That didn’t appear to be how the Human Rights Campaign, a national gay advocacy group, took it.

“We are encouraged by Vice President Biden’s comments, who rightly articulated that loving and committed gay and lesbian couples should be treated equally. Now is the time for President Obama to speak out for full marriage equality for same-sex couples,” campaign President Joe Solmonese said in a statement.

Biden had previously described national acceptance of gay marriage as inevitable, but did not speak specifically about his own beliefs.

About 15 million premature babies are born every year — more than 1 in 10 of the world’s births and a bigger problem than previously believed, according to the first country-by-country estimates of this obstetric epidemic.

The startling toll: 1.1 million of these fragile newborns die as a result, and even those who survive can suffer lifelong disabilities.

Most of the world’s preemies are born in Africa and Asia, says the report released Wednesday.

It’s a problem for the U.S., too, where half a million babies are born too soon. That’s about 1 in 8 U.S. births, a higher rate than in Europe, Canada, Australia or Japan — and even worse than rates in a number of less developed countries, too, the report found.

But the starkest difference between rich and poorer countries: Survival.

“Being born too soon is an unrecognized killer,” said Dr. Joy Lawn of Save the Children, who co-authored the report with the March of Dimes, World Health Organization and a coalition of international health experts. “And it’s unrecognized in the countries where you could have a massive effect in reducing these deaths.”

Sophisticated and expensive intensive care saves the majority of preterm babies in the U.S. and other developed nations, even the tiniest, most premature ones. The risk of death from prematurity is at least 12 times higher for an African newborn than for a European baby, the report found.

Globally, prematurity is not only the leading killer of newborns but the second-leading cause of death in children under 5.

“These facts should be a call to action,” United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon wrote in an introduction to the report.

Three-quarters of the deaths could be prevented by spreading some simple, inexpensive treatments to the neediest countries, the report concludes. For example, providing $1 steroid shots during preterm labor hastens development of immature fetal lungs. They’re standard in developed countries; wider use in low-income countries could save nearly 400,000 babies a year.

Even more lives could be saved by teaching “kangaroo care,” in which moms carry their tiny babies nestled skin-to-skin on their bare chests for warmth when there are no incubators.

“To see babies who are 900 grams (about 2 pounds) survive without any technology, it’s fantastic,” says Lawn, who has watched kangaroo care save lives in countries like Malawi, with the highest preterm birth rate — 18.1 percent.

Also needed: Antibiotics to fight the infections that often kill newborns, and antiseptic cream to prevent umbilical cord infection.

Survival isn’t the only hurdle. No one knows how many preemies suffer disabilities including cerebral palsy, blindness or learning disorders.

That’s why preventing preterm births in the first place is the ultimate goal, one reason for comparing countries — to learn why some do better and some worse. Previously, the groups had estimated that 13 million babies were born prematurely each year, based on regional data.

About 12 percent of U.S. births are preterm, about the same as Wednesday’s report estimates in Thailand, Turkey and Somalia. In contrast, just 5.9 percent of births in Japan and Sweden are premature.

Experts can’t fully explain why the U.S. preemie rate is so much worse than similar high-income countries. But part of the reason must be poorer access to prenatal care for uninsured U.S. women, especially minority mothers-to-be, said March of Dimes epidemiologist Christopher Howson. African-American women are nearly twice as likely as white women to receive late or no prenatal care, and they have higher rates of preterm birth as well, he said.

More disturbing, the report ranks the U.S. with a worse preterm birth rate than 58 of the 65 countries that best track the problem, including much of Latin America. Add dozens of poor countries where the counts are less certain, and the report estimates that 127 other nations may have lower rates.

Whatever the precise numbers, “we have a shared problem among all countries and we need a shared solution,” Howson said.

One key: Not just early prenatal care but more preconception care, he said. Given that in the U.S. alone, nearly half of pregnancies are unplanned, health providers should use any encounter with a woman of childbearing age to check for factors that could imperil a pregnancy.

“Ensure that mom goes into her pregnancy as healthy as possible,” Howson said.

Scientists don’t know what causes all preterm birth, and having one preemie greatly increases the risk for another. But among the risk factors:

_Diabetes, high blood pressure, infections and smoking.

_Being underweight or overweight, and spacing pregnancies less than two years apart.

_Pregnancy before age 17 or over 40.

_Carrying twins or more.

_In wealthier countries, early elective inductions and C-sections.

“A healthy baby is worth the wait,” Howson said, noting that being even a few weeks early can increase the risk of respiratory problems, jaundice, even death.

The WHO defines a preterm birth as before completion of the 37th week of pregnancy. Most preemies fall in the “late preterm” category, born between 32 and 37 weeks. Extreme preemies are born before 28 weeks. So-called “very preterm” babies fall in between.

Lawn’s biggest frustration is how often later preemies die in low-income countries because even the health providers may not know simple steps that might save them — and the fatalism around those deaths.

“If you’re in the States and have a preterm baby now, even at 25 weeks you’ve got a 50 percent chance of survival and people expect that. Whereas in Ghana, if a baby’s born 2 months early, people kind of expect the baby to die,” she said.

The private spaceflight company SpaceX will likely postpone the planned launch of its Dragon capsule to the International Space Station next week, officials announced May 2.

SpaceX was targeting the launch for Monday, May 7, but now will likely shift to a later date, possibly May 10. The unmanned Dragon spacecraft is due to lift off atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

“At this time, a May 7th launch appears unlikely,” SpaceX spokeswoman Kirstin Brost Grantham wrote in a statement. “SpaceX is continuing to work through the software assurance process with NASA. We will issue a statement as soon as a new launch target is set.”

The Dragon mission will be be the very first visit of a privately built spacecraft to the International Space Station. During the test flight, the spacecraft will carry food, supplies and scientific equipment for the astronauts living on the orbiting outpost.

The flight was previously delayed from an April 30 launch date to allow more time for tests of Dragon’s flight software. The new delay is also meant to allow for further checkouts.

SpaceX conducted a test firing of its Falcon 9 booster engines April 30. The test went successfully on its second try, after a first attempt that same day was stalled by an apparent computer glitch.

SpaceX has a $1.6 billion contract with NASA to fly 12 cargo-delivery missions to the space station with Dragon. The capsule is scheduled to be the first spacecraft to fly under NASA’s Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program, which has funded the development of private vehicles to fill the gap in cargo services left by the space shuttle retirement.

The tabloid that first exposed John Edwards’ affair apparently offered the Democratic presidential candidate a way out — it was an offer that, for obvious reasons, he could not accept.

A former campaign spokesman testified in Edwards’ trial Thursday that the National Enquirer offered to consider killing its explosive story about Edwards’ affair with Rielle Hunter and their love child if he would agree to the tabloid’s terms.

Mark Kornblau, who served as Edwards’ traveling press secretary during the 2008 campaign, said the Enquirer wanted Edwards to sign an affidavit swearing he was not the father and the affair had not occurred.

According to Kornblau, an affidavit was drafted, but Edwards decided not to sign it.

The issue, which came up during cross-examination, came as an apparent surprise to the prosecutor, who asked, “Did you ever share the story with the government that you just told (the court)?”

Kornblau replied, “I did not.”

Asked why not, he said: “Because you didn’t ask.”

The incident marked the latest anecdote detailing how Edwards’ staff was forced to deal with his affair — though Edwards tried to hide it from some.

One former aide testified Thursday that he once overheard his boss asking his pregnant mistress in 2007 whether she was “showing yet,” despite being told point-blank by the presidential candidate that Hunter was “crazy” and there was no affair.

Ex-aide John Davis testified that he had concerns about Hunter when she was first hired as a videographer during the 2008 presidential campaign.

“She’s a very nice person, but different sort of person,” he said. “The sorts of things she talked about, the sorts of things she did. She described herself as ‘spiritual.’”

On the stand, Davis described running into Hunter in a hotel elevator after she had been fired from the campaign — something Elizabeth Edwards had demanded after learning about her husband’s affair with the campaign videographer.

David said Hunter told him, “She and Senator Edwards were very much in love. … I told her that I did not care about this, that I was focused on the campaign.”

Davis said he felt uncomfortable and wanted nothing to do with what was going on. But Davis said Edwards called him to his hotel room the next day, where the candidate told him Hunter was “crazy” and there was no affair.

Davis recalled a stay at another hotel in September 2007, during which he overheard Edwards speaking on the phone with Hunter.

“I heard him ask Rielle, ‘Are you showing yet?’”

The prosecution asked how he knew it was Hunter.

Davis replied, “Her voice was distinctive and stood out to me.”

The prosecution also called former staffer Jeff Harris to the stand. The ex-aide, who normally had access to sweep Edwards’ hotel rooms, described his surprise to find the candidate’s door dead-bolted during a Florida campaign stop. He said a person inside the room slipped him a note to contact Andrew Young.

The prosecution asked, “Do you recall one way or another from looking at the hand, the gender of the person?”

“Yes, female,” Harris said.

The testimony of another former aide — about an argument between Edwards and his late wife Elizabeth — had prompted Edwards’ eldest daughter Cate to leave the courtroom in tears a day earlier.

She left again briefly during Thursday’s testimony and when she returned, her father turned around and she pointed to her eye. However, she did not appear upset as she did on Wednesday.

Edwards’ lawyers on Thursday morning also wrapped up cross-examination of former staffer Matthew Nelson. Lead defense lawyer Abbe Lowell asked Nelson about another former staffer Andrew Young, who is the prosecution’s key witness.

Lowell asked, “Do you have your own opinions about Mr. Young’s character?”

Nelson replied, “I never found him to be the most honest and truthful person in the world.”

But Davis had kinder words when asked by Lowell how Edwards treated him.

“Very well,” Davis said.

Lowell asked Davis how Edwards treated other staff members, to which Davis replied positively.

“Do you like him?” Lowell asked.

“I did,” Davis replied. “I still do.”

That answer brought a gentle smile to Edward’s face.

The defense also asked Davis about Fred Baron, one of the two donors who contributed money to keep Edwards’ mistress in hiding. The defense is seeking to establish that Baron was a stickler for following federal campaign finance laws.

“He was very careful to make sure those rules were followed?” Lowell asked.

Davis replied, “Absolutely.”

The defense, too, asked Davis about Young. Davis said the staff nicknamed Young “Rose Petals” because they believed he was overly obsessed with keeping Edwards comfortable.

Prosecutors are trying to prove that Edwards accepted an illegal campaign donation by allowing money from wealthy donors to go toward covering up the affair.

The case, though, has focused in large part on the intimate and salacious details of the behind-the-scenes drama as the secret started to leak out — in the press, and among Edwards’ family and staff.

Edwards has pleaded not guilty to six counts related to campaign-finance violations. He faces up to 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines if convicted on all counts.

Greenhouse gases do much more than just warm the planet, some environmentalists warn: They cause hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, droughts, and even extreme cold spells. Or do they?

Steven Goddard, who runs the skeptical climate blog Real Science and has a background in geology and computer science, has spent thousands of hours studying bad weather events around the world.

He found that the weather was wilder and weirder in the past than it is today.

“People are claiming there are more disasters now,” Goddard said. “That’s crazy. The weather was terrible in the past, back when CO2 was below 350ppm.”

1) Deadly hurricanes
The deadliest hurricane in U.S. history was not hurricane Katrina, but rather one that hit Galveston, Tex., more than a century ago. The Texas State Historical Association notes that, upon the first signs of the hurricane in 1900, a local weather official drove “a horse-drawn cart around low areas warning people to leave.”

For many, the warning was too late.

“A storm wave… caused a sudden rise of 4 feet in water depth, and shortly afterward the entire city was underwater to a maximum depth of 15 feet.”

The hurricane destroyed most of the city, killing between 10,000 and 12,000.

“Hurricanes have not become more frequent or intense,” University of Alabama climate scientist John Christy told FoxNews.com. NOAA hurricane records back up that claim.

“The story on hurricanes is a mixed bag,” says Brenda Ekwurzel, a climate scientist at the Union for Concerned Scientists.

2) Melting Glaciers
Glaciers are melting around the world, and many worry that will cause flooding. But the melting is not necessarily due to greenhouse gases. Goddard points to places where glaciers nearly vanished due to natural warming.

Glacier Bay, in Alaska, is one such place. The glacier was discovered in 1794, but the National Park Service reports that “by 1879… naturalist John Muir discovered that the ice had retreated more than 30 miles … By 1916 it … had melted back 60 miles.”

3) Extreme Cold
It was so cold in New York City that the rivers around Manhattan froze over for five weeks — in 1780, that is. British troops occupying the city at the time rolled cannons from Manhattan across the ice to Staten Island. They even built temporary fortifications on the ice, which stayed solid enough to support men on horseback until March 17.

Throughout the 1800s, the rivers froze over at least six times.

4) Extreme Heat
Many scientists argue that greenhouse gases have made extreme heat events more common.

“If we keep putting heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere at current rates, we can expect a city like NYC to go from having less than 10 days over 100F to between 30 and 45 [such days] by the end of the century,” Ekwurzel of the Union for Concerned Scientists told FoxNews.com, citing a government study.

But Goddard notes that heat waves are nothing new. One newspaper reported that on June 5, 1921, the temperature in New York rose to 107 degrees. In Washington, DC, “an egg carefully broken … on an asphalt pavement … as an experiment was completely fried in 9 minutes.”

The deadliest heat wave in U.S. history also struck long ago, in 1936, causing some 5,000 deaths nationwide.

“Twenty-four of the lower 48 states set their all-time temperature records in the 1930s,” Goddard said. “Just one state [Arizona] has set a new record since the turn of the millennium.”

That shows that U.S. weather has been more extreme in the past, but does not indicate whether climate has warmed in general.

“The warmest month in U.S. history was July of 1936 — and the coldest month in U.S. history was February of that same year,” Goddard said, noting that such rapid changes were due to fluctuations in a major air current known as the jet stream.

5) Drought
The worst drought in U.S. history also took place in the 1930s, destroying so many crops in the Midwest that, as a USDA report put it, “The eroding soil from once-productive range and crop lands filled the air with billowing clouds of dust that subsequently buried farm equipment, buildings and even barbed-wire fences.”

The disaster became known as “The Dust Bowl,” as 2.5 million Americans abandoned their farms.

“Climate was never safe,” Goddard said. “You had horrific fires, droughts, floods, heat waves — it hasn’t gotten any worse with the CO2 increase.”
